How do I participate in Educational Talent Search?

Target Schools

ETS (Educational Talent Search) targets participants for participation in the program primarily from the northern urban core of Lake County schools from the East Chicago, Hammond, and Lake Ridge school corporations.

Annually, the program serves 700 students as stipulated in the Education Department guidelines and at least two thirds of the participants must be first generation (neither parent/guardian possesses a bachelor's degree at time of application) AND meet low Income guidelines as determined annually by ED.

If you are age 11 or completed at least the 5th grade and attend school in one of the aforementioned school districts, you may be eligible for participation.

Educational Talent Search Partner Schools:

Participant Recruitment

Generally occurs during the months of August thru November annually. This is a joint effort between the target school liaisons and ETS. A list of potential participants is generated followed by contacts to families via telephone or letter. If you are a student (or parent/guardian of a student) attending one of the target schools you may initiate the application process by contacting the office at 989-2460.

You will receive a higher priority for program participation if you are a:

  • student who comes from a family in which neither parent has completed a four-year college degree (first-generation college students) AND
  • you are a student whose family income is within federal requirements and you are a student who is a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States AND
  • you are a student who has demonstrated a need for program services in order to pursue successfully a program of education beyond high school AND
  • you are a student who has completed at least the 5th grade but has not earned a high school graduation credential, or is at least 11 years old but not older than 19.

Individual Education Plan

Each participant is required to complete an interview prior to enrollment and participation. During the interview program goals and expectations are clarified. A parent or guardian is expected to participate in this process, unless the participant is 18 years of age or older.

An individual educational plan (IEP) is developed for all program participants. The IEP is used as a roadmap for interventions needed to accomplish participant academic goals and springboard to postsecondary enrollment.
