Initiative Component - Grades 6-8
The Initiative Component is designed to motivate and encourage
middle and junior high school participants to excel at a maximum
academic level to ensure proper readiness for secondary school.
Participants have the option of attending workshops related to
academic preparation, mentoring, parental support, college planning,
leadership development, community service, etc. Initiative
participants automatically transition to the next level (High
School Component) participation in ETS and are encouraged to
enroll in the 21st Century Scholars Program.
Career Exploration
Career Exploration activities are planned throughout the year to
encourage and reinforce the importance of implementing an early
career guidance awareness program. Participants are provided
assessments that gauge personality and social interests so that they
can gain a better understanding of themselves as it relates to
occupational choice. ETS utilizes its self-developed Middle/Junior
High School Needs Assessment.
Day on Campus
Day on Campus is held bi-annually usually during the month of
May. All participants in the Initiative Component are invited and
transported to Purdue University Calumet to experience campus life
at a commuter college. Participants attend classes, attend
motivational seminars and get a firsthand glimpse of life as a
college student. There is always a special presentation on the 21st
Century Scholars program. This program was implemented by the State
of Indiana to assist economically disadvantaged Indiana families in
financing educational costs. An awards presentation and keynote
speaker culminate this event.
Educational/Cultural Field Experiences
Educational field experiences are planned throughout the academic
school year for participants at targeted schools. These field
experiences are designed to highlight an array of institutions,
professions, and occupations and allows the participant to be
exposed to educational institutions and network and develop
professional/mentor relationships.
Project EXCEL Summer Enrichment
A three week summer enrichment program is designed to enhance
reading, mathematical, and technology skills. Those selected will
participate in interactive classes in math, science, computer
applications, and/or language arts; go on field trips that are both
educational and fun; experience an opportunity to talk with
successful persons representing many career fields; and be
recognized for academic and social achievements. EXCEL is generally
held in July on the campus of Purdue University Calumet.
Junior Emerging Leaders (JEL)
An intense two year leadership initiative developed in
conjunction with the PUC Upward Bound program is designed for
targeted participants that possess the aptitude and commitment to be
trained as future leaders. Participants attend leadership seminars,
engage in community service, attend cultural events, and complete
other miscellaneous projects. Upon completion, participants receive
a special commendation for service.
