Virtual International Media Center
Welcome to the home page of the PUC Virtual International
Media Center (VIMC). The Department of Foreign Languages
and Literatures is working to investigate, experiment and develop
an interactive
distribution system via web technologies for the delivery
of foreign language instruction. One of VIMC's great advantages will
be that
it will be accessible 24 hours a day, so students can
do their homework at their convenience, and instructors can access
resources whenever
their creative moments might occur.
The first phase of this project is the online delivery of lab audio
programs (LAPs) for basic language courses. With the
permission of McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, and other
textbook publishers, we
are pleased to offer streaming audio
on the Web to students in almost all of the PUC basic
language courses. These files are intended
only for PUC students registered in these classes who
have purchased the requisite textbook and materials,
who will be given a password
to access their LAP online. These digitized audio files
are housed on the campus RealServer and streamed
to students via .
Students
wishing to access the LAPs from a personal computer
will need to download and install the free RealOne
Player. To download it now, click on the button below:

This is only the beginning. Our vision for the future is an authentic,
multi-user environment that encourages total immersion,
provides feedback on your language abilities and cultural skills,
and can
be tailored to individual interests and objectives. Our
intermediate goals are to expand content beyond basic language instruction
and
pool instructors' own materials online, to expand content
to video programming, and to experiment with synchronous and asynchronous
audio “chat” and lecturing.
