Lynn W. Zimmerman, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Teacher Preparation at Purdue University Calumet (PUC). She served as Peace Corps volunteer in Poland for two years teaching English as a Foreign Language and has worked as a middle school and high school librarian. Dr. Zimmerman completed her doctoral studies in Curriculum and Teaching with a concentration in the Cultural Foundations of Education at UNCG in Greensboro, NC. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Speech and a master's Degree in Library Science at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Zimmerman's areas of research and writing have focused primarily in the areas of immigration, language learning, and intercultural learning. One of her current projects is an interdisciplinary research project with nursing faculty at UNC Chapel Hill investigating the recruitment and retention of nursing students who are Hispanic. She and colleagues in Israel and Taiwan are also conducting research on intercultural learning using the Internet as a form of online communication between native and non-native speakers of English. Courses presently taught at PUC EDPS 285 - Diversity & Education; EDCI 585 - Multicultural Education; EDCI591 - Teaching English as a New Language Students in the Mainstream Classroom - online Dr. Zimmerman is working with Dr. Rita Brusca-Vega in the Graduate School of Education to develop a Master's and licensure program in Bilingual/ESL Education which they hope will be available to students by 2009. |
